Bravo. In Somerville MA, the most densely settled municipality in America, after WWII second only to Calcutta, we’ve been vertical gardening for more than a century. Grape and hops grow up through the cracks in cement. The grapes shade car parks on trellises and hops are destroying my wooden fence. The four breweries prefer German hops to Somerville’s finest but just Incase, we’re ready. On porches in pots, window boxes and hanging pots residents grow tomatoes, basal and chilli peppers. Gentrification is not a problem when the Gentry pay locals and urban youth to tend urban gardens. They like mushrooms that grow in dank basements and warehouses. And they love locally brewed beer. Have you tried Somerville heirloom tomatoes and chillies? If not you don’t know what your missing.
